To ALL WINGS Members:
Our group met on February 1 to decide the direction our group would take for the coming year. At this meeting, we decided to pursue the following projects:
Project 1 – Continue with Angel Tree and contact Prison Fellowship Ministries to learn about year round opportunities to help children of prisoners. Continue to sork with our local jail to put wholesome and Christian reading materials in the jail library.
Project 2 – Several were interested in Florida’s Disaster Relief and Recovery Training. Contact Sharon Kirby for more information.
Project 3 – Continue to support the Christian Service Center by letting our people know of their needs. Currently the need men’s jeans size 34-40, men’s shoes size 11 and up, coats, and jackets and socks for kids. We will ask the congregation to look in their closets for items to donate.
Project 4 – Do gift baskets to be given to women in half-way houses, Pregnancy Care Center, etc. Each month we will bring items to the meetings and when we have enough for a basket, then the basket will be donated. Look to the left for a list of basket needs.
Project 5 – We would like to work with the Men’s Ministry to help our widows, widowers, and the elderly and handicapped of our congregation to do jobs that need to be done around the house. For example, fix a leaky faucet, clean the house, rake the yard, mend clothing items, etc. Little jobs that need to be done that they can’t do themselves, don’t know where to get it fixed, or can’t afford to have it fixed. We will be offering our support and assistance.
Project 6 – Promoting home missions by highlighting missionaries in the U.S., getting guest speakers, sending our old literature, planning a mission trip, etc. Some of these things are being discussed for church-wide participation so this project will be going on for a long time.
Project 7 – The non-profit arm of Guardian ad Litem, Voices for the Children, asked us in 2009 to provide baked goods to sell at a fund raising dinner to help purchase shoes, socks, and undergarments for foster children in our area. Several members said that they would be willing to do this baking again.
Project 8 – Send cards and letters to recovering American soldiers. You are to encourage them, let them know we are praying and thinking of them, and witness to them. You can sign your name or just put WINGS (Women IN God’s Service) of Southside Baptist Church. You may send the cards and letters as often as you like. The address is A Recovering American Soldier, c/o Walter Reed Army Medical Center, 6900 Georgia Avenue, NW, Washington, D.C. 20307-5001.
Project 9 – Some members wanted to help me get bargain clothing and toy items for the Angel Tree ministry. I will let you know as I learn of special deals if you are interested in helping with this project. Others will let us know as they learn of special deals. Last year Penny’s had a buy one get one free offer from their clearance racks. I got items for under a $1.00 and not more than $5.00.
Project 10 – Make new cards from old cards that have been donated and then sell them not only to the congregation but to people in the community to help fund projects. We have plenty of money now, but near the end of the year we may need extra funds so we can begin now to get the cards ready.
Project 11 – Another fundraiser idea was to have a church post office during Thanksgiving and Christmas. Members would deliver their cards (to members only) to the church post office, pay their postage, and their cards would be delivered to the other members or can be picked up at the church post office.
Project 12 – Some members were interested in checking to see if we could be of any assistance with the homeless shelter or with the homeless so this is an area that will be investigated for later discussion.
You may not be interested in participating in all projects and that is okay, please let me know the items that you would like to do. Our next meeting will be Tuesday, March 2 from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at the church. We will discuss in more detail the projects above. After this meeting, I hope that the meetings will only be one hour in length. You may bring something to eat.
